This is a green heron, though I don't often see any green on it. In contrast to the tri-colored heron's often wild antics, the green heron's movements are rare, slow, calculated and pin-point accurate. That raised foot was moving very slowly, and the birds advances were very slow, with more stops than starts. Green herons may be my favorite wading bird because of their diligent hunting skills and their high success rate.
