4789 That afternoon Jodi and I boarded a sight-seeing “train” to view the “cottages” in Jekyll Island’s historic district, owned by members of the exclusive Jekyll Island Club. Jekyll Island’s cottages are like Newport, Rhode Island’s cottages: mansions. There are dozens of these “cottages” on the island, mostly concentrated in the historic district. Despite the wealth of the cottages’ owners, the Great Depression brought the demise of the Jekyll Island Club, and the state of Georgia bought the entire island in 1947 for $675,000 through a condemnation order. Some of the cottages are open for lodging, so you, too, can live (for a while) like a millionaire.
