6514 This American bittern (NOT! See below.) surprised me by standing in a tree, where he is obviously obvious (sorry), instead of among the reeds, where his camoflage would make him almost impossible to detect. I stand perplexed by the endless surprises of nature. AND NOW I KNOW WHY! I just saw today (06/25/09) in Nature Photographer magazine a photo of this bird and it is NOT an American Bittern, but a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron. They look similar, but to the astute observer (not I, in this case) their differences are apparent. I've been a bird watcher for 45 years and I still get bamboozled by them. Dang!
