2908 While we didn’t see any bald eagles, we did see an American kestrel. In my old, 1975 bird book in which I keep track of my sightings, this bird is called a sparrow hawk. Things change, even in the bird world, and the birds never even know that their name has been changed. First Cassius Clay became Muhammed Ali, then Lew Alcindor became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and then the sparrow hawk became the American kestrel. Other bird name changes over the past 35 years have been the hoary woodpecker to the hairy woodpecker, and the Louisiana heron to the tricolored heron.
